The right man, in the right place …

“Hosanna!” or “Crucify him!” – Holy Week contrasts

Jesus is heading towards the cross and none of his disciples know it. Jesus is God’s anointed … the disciples are sure of it; and he’s even headed to the right place to display his power. As further evidence, Jesus sends two of them into the city to secure a ride for this “red carpet” event. The Lord God’s anointed King is coming to the Holy City of God … Jerusalem. He’s coming to bring deliverance and freedom! This might not be the display of military power they were hoping for, but this works … it’ll do!

When they come down the Mount of Olives, and Jerusalem comes into sight, the whole crowd of disciples goes wild. They respond with shouts and actions based on Psalm 118:26–27: “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you. The Lord is God, and he has made his light shine upon us. With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the horns of the altar.”

This is the right man. It’s the right time … they’re in the right place … they’re headed towards the altar right now.
