ORDER OF SERVICE

Hosanna to the Son of David, the King of Israel. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The Greeting:
Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you and also with you.

Welcome
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen

The Palm Gospel: Luke 19:28-40

The Blessing of the Palm Crosses
Dear friends in Christ, as we look forward to the celebration of our Lord’s death and resurrection, we remember that Christ went to Jerusalem to complete his work as our Saviour, to suffer, to die, and to rise again.  May we follow him in faith and love, so that, united with him in his sufferings, we may share his risen life.
God our Saviour, whose Son Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem as Messiah to suffer and to die; let these palms be for us signs of his victory and grant that we who bear them in his name may ever hail him as our King, and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life. Amen.

Hymn: NEH 509 All glory, laud and honour

The Collect:
True and humble king, hailed by the crowd as Messiah: grant us the faith to know you and love you, that we may be found beside you on the way of the cross, which is the path of glory.  Amen.

Reading – Philippians 2:5-11

Prayer of Penance
At the start of Holy Week we come to the cross of Christ in sorrow and penitence for the sins that he bore there.

Lord Jesus, we turn to you in faith, repenting of our wrongdoing and seeking your pardon.
Merciful Lord, forgive and heal us.
We have acted in our own strength, and not put our trust wholly in you.
Merciful Lord, forgive and heal us.
We have been arrogant and proud, and not humbled ourselves before you.
Merciful Lord, forgive and heal us.
We have acted out of self-interest, and not shown your love or compassion to those in need.
Merciful Lord, forgive and heal us.
We have lived as though you had no part in our lives, and not acknowledged you as Lord.
Merciful Lord, forgive and heal us.

Turn our failings into strengths, and our weaknesses into opportunities for the sake of your kingdom.
Amen.

May the God of forgiveness show you his mercy, forgive your sins, and bring you to eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hymn: NEH 92  There is a green hill far away

Passion Reading: Luke 22:14-23:56

Silence for reflection

Prayers of Intercession      prayer is offered for the world and its people, for those who suffer and those in need, for the Church and its members.

The Peace:
Once we were far off, but now in union with Christ Jesus we have been brought near through the shedding of Christ’s blood, for he is our peace.
The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you.

Hymn: Morning glory, starlit sky

Offering:
Let us present our offerings to the Lord.
Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power,
the glory, the splendour, and the majesty:
for everything in heaven and on earth is yours.
All things come from you, and of your own we give you.

Eucharistic Prayer 3
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Worship and praise belong to you, maker of light and darkness. Your wisdom draws beauty from chaos, brings harvest out of sorrow and leads the exiles home. In Christ your Son enemies are reconciled, debts forgiven and strangers made welcome. Your spirit frees us to live as sons and daughters in our Father’s house. We who by Christ’s power follow the way of the Cross, sharing the joy of his obedience, now offer you our praise, with angels and archangels and the whole company of heaven, singing the hymn of your unending glory.
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
Glory and thanksgiving be to you, most loving Father, for Christ in whom the world is reconciled. Lifted on the cross, his suffering and forgiveness spanned the gulf our sins had made. Through that dark struggle death was swallowed up in victory, that life and light may reign. Before he was given up to suffering and death, recalling Israel’s release, the night in which the sons of Egypt died, your Chosen One, himself the First-Born, freely offered his life. At supper with his disciples he took bread and offered you thanks. He broke bread, and gave it to them saying: “Take, eat. This is my Body: it is broken for you.” After supper, he took the cup, he offered you thanks, and gave it to them saying: “Drink this, all of you. This is my Blood of the new covenant; it is poured out for you, and for all, that sins may be forgiven. Do this in remembrance of me.”
We now obey your Son’s command. We recall his blessed passion and death, his glorious resurrection and ascension; and we look for the coming of his Kingdom. Made one with him, we offer you these gifts and with them ourselves, a single, holy, living sacrifice.
Hear us, most merciful Father, and send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon this bread and this wine, that, overshadowed by his life-giving power, they may be the Body and Blood of your Son, and we may be kindled with the fire of your love and renewed for the service of your Kingdom.
Help us, who are baptised into the fellowship of Christ’s Body to live and work to your praise and glory; may we grow together in unity and love until at last, in your new creation, we enter into our heritage in the company of the Virgin Mary, the apostles and prophets, and all our brothers and sisters living and departed.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be to you, Lord of all ages, world without end.
Amen

Breaking of the Bread:
The living bread is broken for the life of the world.
Lord, unite us in this sign

The Lord’s Prayer:
As our saviour has taught us, so we pray:
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Do not bring us to the time of trial but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever.  Amen

Communion Song:
Jesus, Lamb of God: have mercy on us.
Jesus, bearer of our sins: have mercy on us.
Jesus, redeemer of the world: grant us peace.

We do not presume to come to this your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

Distribution of Communion

Prayers after communion:
Lord Jesus Christ, you humbled yourself in taking the form of a servant, and in obedience died on the cross for our salvation: give us the mind to follow you and to proclaim you as Lord and King, to the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Faithful God, may we who share this banquet glory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, our salvation, life and hope, who reigns as Lord now and for ever. Amen.

Hymn: NEH 334 All the people that on earth do dwell

The Blessing
May the Father, who so loved the world that he gave his only Son, bring you by faith to his eternal life. And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always.  Amen.

Go in the peace of Christ. In the name of Christ. Amen.
